Welcome

For years, I’ve threatened to start a blog/vlog/YouTube channel with my thoughts, experiences and what I’m up to. Interestingly, I have been asked by more than a handful of people to do this. I guess it takes all kinds?

I like writing. Well, to be more specific, I like the discipline of writing. Through all of my degrees, writing and research were by far my favorite parts of each program. So, secretly, I had always hoped I would get to this blog/vlog/YouTube idea. Not necessarily because I thought people would love it (I do hope they enjoy it), but mostly I like getting my thoughts, experiences and exploits on paper. I like the reflection aspect of writing.

Finding topics to write about has never been an issue for me. Topics pop into my head all the time, and I mean ALL THE TIME! I want to write about boating and sailing, including travel experiences, boat maintenance, costs of boats (oh my!), living the boating life and so on. I want to write about philosophical topics like being an entrepreneur, being a professor, what is retirement going to look like, politics, population expansion, parenting, education, cognition, neuroscience and more. I want to write about the goofy and adventurous stuff I do, like learning to kiteboard, skiing, welding, building, photography, dealing with people and making mistakes. How do you structure this type of a site, knowing that some people would be interested in sailing, but not the philosophical posts? (Honestly, most are probably not interested in the goofy stuff, but it would be enjoyable reading… I think…) Should I even care how it is structured? And who cares if someone doesn’t like the boating lifestyle part! Who am I writing this for anyway? Them or me?

…Do you see the problem?

A while ago, I went back to school to renew my USCG Captain’s license, partly so I could gain the knowledge as I remembered enjoying the learning process and partly for business reasons. As a licensed Captain, you can run your charter boat if you so decided. I earned my USCG 100 ton, Master’s License. We had friends over for dinner the day it had arrived in the mail. Jane told them about the license and said, “We now have to call him Captain Dr. Kev!” They, of course, wouldn’t let this go, and yes, Professor, Captain, Dr, Colonel (KY Colonel), Duke (Duke of Hazard) all came out much to their enjoyment.

There it was, clear as day… The solution to the problem stated above. I’ll write about all aspects of life as Captain (boats et al.), Dr. (philosophy et al.), Kev (life and goofy).

So here it is: CaptainDrKev. I hope you enjoy, learn and think (and maybe laugh a bit, too).

Fair Winds,
Kev

Human Performance

I grew up thinking that I could do anything. Thinking like this was not born out of a highly exaggerated ego; it was born out of necessity.

Projects and Retirement

Viktor Frankl taught us that we feel alive and in charge when we are engaged and have a purpose in life. For me, that means the things I’m doing are engaging, make a difference and add to my mission.
